Dutch Post-Impressionist painter Vincent Willem van Gogh (1853 – 1890) is considered one of the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art. Over the course of just a little more than a decade, he created an astounding body of work, producing approximately 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, the majority of which were created in the final two years of his life in France, where he ultimately passed away. His paintings are characterized by bold colors and dramatic, impulsive, and expressive brushwork that laid the foundations for modern art.

Among van Gogh's most renowned series of paintings are his "Sunflowers," which consist of two sets. The first was executed in Paris in 1887 and depicts the flowers lying on the ground, while the second set, created a year later in Arles, showcases bouquets of sunflowers in a vase. Van Gogh associated both series with his friend, the artist Paul Gauguin, who had acquired two of the Paris versions. Approximately eight months later, van Gogh hoped to impress Gauguin once again with his "Sunflowers," which were now part of the painted Décoration he had prepared for the guestroom of his home in Arles, where Gauguin was expected to stay. After Gauguin's departure, van Gogh envisioned the two major versions as wings of the Berceuse Triptych, and eventually, he included them in his exhibition at Les XX in Bruxelles.
